Does your child really need a tutor?
[ 21-01-2008 ]

A survey has indicated that 8 out of 10 students in Singapore are having some form of tuition, either one-to-one tuition by a home tutor or sitting in a bigger but cheaper class in a tuition centre. However, is the money and time spent helping your child efffectively?

First of all, you need to be clear in the real objective of engaging a tutor for your child. In our years of experience in the tuition profession, we have found that parents look for tutors for one or more of the following reasons :

-       monitor and guide child in completing the school’ s homework
-       help child understand and reinfoce concepts taught in school
-       stretch and challenge the child to achieve Band 1 / A*

You may wish to consider the following guidelines when you are looking for a tutor :

-       competent in the teaching of the subject
-       familiar with the school syllabus and exam format
-       ability to analyse your child’s strength and weakness
-       good interpersonal skills and able to relate well to your child
-       good communication skills and be able to explain the concepts clearly

Many parents blame the school teachers or the home tutor when the child is not performing. Sometimes, the underlying cause may be due to a lack of motivation and tuition may not always be the best solution.  The parent also plays an important role for the child to achieve academic success. As a parent, we need to understand what our child really needs. Try having a heart-to-heart talk with your child. Developing the love for knowledge in your child and cultivating the motivation to learn is crucial in the child's academic success. You may not have the necessary subject knowledge but you can still spend time to monitor the progress of your child. When your child can feel your geniune love and concern for him, the other things like discipline and academic performance will fall in place easily.

If you have decided to engage a tutor, be careful not to have unrealistically high expectations on your child or the tutor as this will cause undue stress and eventually destroy your child's desire for learning.Continue to be involved in your child's learning by having regular discussion with the tutor on the child's progress. Be supportive of the tutor's decisions to value add to your child’s learning.
